Hello all! I hope you have had a nice break but its time to get back into school mode.

The English Department offers four awards for undergrad students, only students who are registered in an undergraduate degree at Concordia University will be accepted. Visiting students, independent students and senior audits are not eligible.

Compton-Lamb Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship (value of 500$) is designated for a currently-registered and full-time student who will be entering the FINAL 24-30 credits in either Honours English Literature or Honours English and Creative Writing programs in the 2014-15 academic year. Students graduating in June or November of 2014 are ineligible. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic excellence and an essay submitted on any aspect of English literary studies. Submissions must include an updated student record.

A.G. Hooper Prize

award of $250 for the best essay submitted by an undergraduate on a topic in literature written in English before 1700.

MacGuigan Prize

Award of $250 for the best essay submitted  by an undergraduate on a topic in literature written in English from the 18th century to the present.

The Irving Layton Awards for Creative Writing are two awards worth $500 each for excellence in the writing of poetry and fiction. To be eligible, students must be currently registered in an undergraduate degree at Concordia. Students may enter both categories  but with only one submission in each. Submissions may be from poems or stories written for courses or they may be written specifically for the competition.


For all submissions the deadline is Thursday, February 6th, 2014 at 4:00pm. All submissions are to be left at the English Department office, Sir George Williams Campus, Room LB -641. All submissions must be made in triplicate, collated and stapled. Include a cover page with your name, student ID, telephone and e-mail address with each copy of your submission. Incomplete, late or electronic submissions will not be accepted.
